The Trail

The Continental Divide Trail was designated a National Scenic Trail by the United States Congress in 1978.

This trail passes through five states (New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana), three National Parks, one National Monument, ten Wilderness Areas, and over twenty National Forests.

This is the longest, most rugged, and arguably most scenic of the National Scenic Trails.  However, the Continental Divide Trail is only 70 percent complete.

Much of the current route is still open to motorized vehicles, and significant portions are cross country.

Organizations such as The Continental Divide Trail Alliance and the United States land management agencies are working together to determine permanent routes, fund trail construction, and obtain right of way through private property.

Additional resources from the public and/or Congress are necessary to achieve a permanent and continuous trail.  I hope to draw attention to the trail that may facilitate its completion.
